How to Fill Holes in Stucco Before Painting

Stucco damage, either cracks or small holes, detract from the overall appeal of your home and should be repaired to stave off possible damage to the interior layers of your walls. Repair holes and cracks with a bag of premixed stucco as opposed to creating your own stucco mixture to shorten preparation time and the physical work necessary to complete the job. Once applied to the wall, you can repaint the entire wall or paint the work area to match the current color.

Instructions

    • 1

Vacuum the hole in the stucco to remove any dirt and debris. These items prevent the new stucco from adhering to the wall properly. When finished, spray the wall with a hose. This removes any remaining debris and moistens the wall which, in turn, prevents the wall from soaking in the moisture from the stucco mixture after application.

    • 2

Pour the premixed stucco mixture into a bucket and slowly add water. Continually mix with a shovel until the mixture has a peanut butter-like consistency. Add stucco coloring to the mixture and mix in with the shovel.

    • 3

Pick up slabs of stucco mixture with a trowel and place on a hawk. Push the mixture to the middle of the hawk with your trowel. Next, place the long side of the trowel into the stucco slab, apply pressure between the trowel and the hawk, tilt the hawk upwards and slide the trowel up to remove the stucco mixture. This method prevents spillage.

    • 4

Apply the stucco directly onto the hole. Smooth out the layer with the trowel.

    • 5

Rub the entire work area with a sponge after you have smoothed out the stucco mixture with the trowel. The sponge softens the stucco. When finished, place the sponge flatly against the stucco and remove. This lifts some of the stucco and creates the textured surface. Continue until the surface matches the rest of the wall.

Allow the stucco to dry for several days before determining if you need to paint. The stucco lightens for several days. Paint the new stucco any time after it completely dries.
