How to Remove an Aluminum Downspout

The preferred material for constructing gutters, including downspouts, is aluminum. Aluminum is a soft metal that is easy to bend and cut and it doesn't rust like steel or iron. A downspout is a rectangular shaped aluminum tube that conveys the water vertically from the bottom of the gutter to the ground. The downspout often consists of sections that are connected with stainless steel screws. You can remove a downspout by following a straightforward procedure.

Instructions

    • 1

Start disassembling the downspout from the ground and work your way to the gutter. Find the end of the downspout, which may sometimes be inserted into a crock in the ground. Find where the end section is connected to the section before it.

    • 2

Remove the screws that secure the last section to the one before it using an electric drill with a driver bit installed. Place the drill in reverse mode to loosen the screws counterclockwise. There are often two to four screws per connection. Pull out the last section from the one before it once all the screws have been removed. If the last section is in a crock, pull it out by hand.

    • 3

Continue separating sections of the downspout using the same method you used to disconnect the first one.

    • 4

Set up a ladder that is tall enough to allow you to reach the bottom of the gutter comfortably. Use the ladder to disconnect the higher pieces and finally the one that is connected to the bottom of the gutter.
