How to Melt Ice on Pavers

After laying pavers down on a patio, walkway or driveway, you need to take special care of them. Rather than treating them like a hunk of cement, you need to take delicate care of pavers because of their color treatment and ornate features. This is never more true than in the winter, when typical rock salt will erode and discolor your pavers. Do not fret, however, because there is a simple alternative that you can use.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase magnesium chloride from a hardware or home improvement store. It should be with the rock salt. It comes in a solid form, much like rock salt.

    • 2

Shovel the pavers with a plastic shovel to avoid the wear that metal could cause.

    • 3

Sprinkle the magnesium chloride onto the pavers with your hand. Apply the magnesium chloride consistently.

    • 4

Shovel the ice after it has begun to melt to clear the moisture away from the pavers.

    • 5

Sweep the magnesium chloride solid into a pan when it gets warmer.
