How to Get a Storm Door From Slamming

Correctly installed, a storm door will swing slowly closed on its own, but a gust of wind or even a light breeze can slam the door shut, causing injury or damage. The solution is a storm door closer, which uses an air cylinder to slow the swinging door to gently close it. A closer also prevents the door from swinging open too far. A metal tab on the closer arm can hold the door in the open position if necessary.

Instructions

    • 1

Mark the position of the storm door closer on the hinge side jamb near the top of the door, 1 to 2 inches below the top of the door. The closer must clear the top door jamb when the door opens, so consider the overall diameter of the door closer when positioning it. Make a second mark 1/4 inch from the outside edge of the jamb.

    • 2

Place the jamb bracket against the hinge side jamb centered over the location mark with the edge on the 1/4-inch mark. Mark the bracket screw hole locations with a pencil. Drill 1/16-inch pilot holes in the jamb for the screws. Fasten the bracket to the jamb with the long screws supplied in the package with a screwdriver.

    • 3

Insert the long end of the closer arm into the jamb bracket. Place the shorter of the two supplied pins through the hole in the bracket, and through the hole in the closer arm to secure it in place. Place the other end of the closer into the door bracket. Insert the long pin through the hole in the door bracket and through the hole in the closer to connect the two pieces.

    • 4

Close the storm door and ensure it is latched. Hold the door bracket against the metal door and place the level against the underside of the closer cylinder. Level the bracket so the bubble in the level is centered in the vial. Mark the bracket hole locations on the door with a pencil.

Drill 1/16-inch pilot holes for the screws in the door at the marked locations. Use care to only penetrate the inside skin of the door and not go all the way through the door. Attach the door bracket to the door using the short screws provided in the package.
