How to Clear Your Roof Satellite of Snow

Snow buildup on a satellite dish often results in a malfunctioning dish. The snow on the dish disrupts the signal and often results in no signal being transmitted to the receiver inside the house. Snow buildup that isn't removed in a timely fashion may melt partially and result in an ice buildup, which is harder to remove. After it snows, you should make clearing the dish of any snow part of your regular outdoor maintenance routine, just like shoveling the walk.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a long-handled broom to carefully push large snow deposits off the satellite dish. Use a light touch and try not to bump the dish much; you may knock it out of position and cause further interruption to your signal.

    • 2

Fill a powerful child's water gun with hot water.

    • 3

Squirt water from the gun on the remaining snow on the satellite dish.

    • 4

Purchase and install a device to keep your satellite dish safe from future snow buildups. At the lower end of the price range you can purchase a cover that will enclose the dish and keep snow away from the important components without making the signal degrade. If you're willing to spend a bit more money, you can purchase an electric heater that attaches to the dish and melts snow off as it falls on the unit. Either way, installation of a device of this type prevents any worries that you will have to get on a ladder or on the roof to deal with a snow problem.
