Removing a Fascia Board

Fascia boards are fitted to the exposed ends of roof rafters and are usually constructed from wrought timber. They are often fitted next to soffits, which provide roof ventilation. The purpose of fascia boards is to improve the appearance of a house and to protect the roof from weather damage. Fascia boards may need to be removed due to rotting or cracking. This is a task that you can usually achieve with a few simple tools in around 30 minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Set a ladder against your house in line with the area of fascia you wish to remove. Ascend the ladder, holding the bag of required tools. Ask a friend to pass the tools from an upstairs window as you work if you can't manage to ascend the ladder in this way.

    • 2

Cut back the felt that surrounds the fascia board, using a utility knife. Cut back around 3 or 4 inches away from the house so you can see the guttering.

    • 3

Remove the gutter. Prize out the metal spikes that fasten the gutter to the roof using a pry bar. Avoid applying too much pressure to the gutter or it may bend. Disconnect the gutter from the downspout by removing the sheet metal screws with a screwdriver.

    • 4

Cut away any sealants that bind the soffits to the window frame, using the utility knife. This will make the roof rafters visible and allow you to remove the fascia board.

    • 5

Take out any nails that attach the fascia board to the rafters. Use the claw side of a hammer to grip the handles and prize them away, using a rocking motion.

    • 6

Remove the fascia board. Position the pry bar behind the area of fascia you want to remove and the rafter ends of the roof. Push the base of the pry bar away from you so the top end pushes against the fascia board. The board should come away with a moderate amount of pressure.

Clean out any debris from behind the board once it has been removed. Use a screwdriver to remove the debris to make it easier to install a replacement fascia board.
