Keeping Bugs out of Siding

A trail or swarm of bugs inside your home is not a pleasant sight for any homeowner. Considering how small they are, it's a wonder that more bugs aren't permanent residents in our living rooms. If a lot of bugs seem to be making themselves at home, consider looking to your house siding for some clues as to how they are getting in. Even the smallest crack in your home's siding can be a portal towards warmth.

Instructions

    • 1

Inspect your siding for cracks, loose siding, and other areas that pests might like to climb into. Even small, seemingly unassuming cracks, could be inviting to bugs. Look for rotted siding pieces or wall pieces under the siding that require replacing. Check around windows for loose trim pieces and along the roof line where bees and wasps may want to build a nest.

Clean your siding well. Use a pressure washer, if possible, on your siding. Vinyl and aluminum sidings withstand pressure washing well. If your siding is wood, consider using a garden hose with a jet spray attachment, as pressure washing can damage the wood.

Repair any loose or rotten siding pieces or trim. Clean and spray underneath the piece you are removing.

    • 4

Spray a pesticide suitable to kill the types of bugs you are dealing with over and in the cracks of your siding. If pests are getting underneath siding overlays, then spray underneath them as well.

Seal any cracks or crevices in your siding with caulk. This will prevent pests from getting in from the outside. Spray and remove any pests that are in the cracks before sealing them, however, to keep from sealing the pests inside the house.
