How to Mount a Flower Box to Vinyl Siding

Flower boxes that hang under the bottom edge of exterior windows are called window boxes. These rectangular planters attach to the side of the home and provide a location to grow a variety of plants and flowers. Hanging a window box properly requires that you use a bolt long enough to penetrate through the exterior wall into the framing of the house. When the exterior has siding on it, predrilling the hole prevents excessive damage to the siding.

Instructions

    • 1

Walk inside the home to the window where you are hanging the flower box. Power up a stud finder and press it against the wall under the left side of the window. Slide it slowly to the right until a light displays. Mark the location with a pencil and then continue sliding the stud finder to the right side of the window, marking each stud location.

    • 2

Measure the width of the window sill with a tape measure and note the locations of the studs. Go back outside the home and use the tape measure to transfer the stud locations to the vinyl siding. Draw another mark in the center of the window sill.

    • 3

Measure the width of the flower box and divide it in two to locate the center. Mark the center with a pencil and then hold it up to the vinyl siding, aligning the center mark on the box with the center mark on the siding. Mark the wall stud locations on the back of the window box.

    • 4

Place the flower box on a sturdy surface with the front edge facing down. Insert a 1/4-inch diameter drill bit into a drill and create a hole in each stud mark location in the center back of the box.

    • 5

Walk to the window and drill 3-inch deep holes in the vinyl siding at the same locations where the box will mount to. If needed, hold the box back up to the wall and draw a dot in each hole using a pencil.

    • 6

Hold the flower box up to the siding and align the holes in it with those in the siding. Inset a 3-inch lag bolt through the inside of the flower box in each hole and tighten them using a wrench or powder drill.

    • 7

Open a tube of clear exterior-grade silicone caulk and apply a 1/8-inch bead along the top of the flower box where it meets the siding.

    • 8

Fill the flower box with potting soil and plant as desired.
