DIY: Trailer Awning

A trailer awning can be the perfect way to enjoy the outdoors while protecting you from the heat of the sun or keeping you dry in a light rain. Trailer awnings can be portable or permanent. If you use your trailer to travel a lot, you can make a simple but effective portable awning. It requires only a few hours of work. Once completed, it can be erected or taken down in minutes and stored safely inside your trailer when not in use.

  • Super glue
  • Measuring tape

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the distance between the grommet holes on the end of the tarp you will attach to the roof of your trailer. Then measure and mark where you would like to attach the tarp. Mark out the spots at the edge of the roof to which to glue hooks, making sure they are the same distance apart as the grommets in your tarp.

    • 2

Use a generous amount of super glue to attach the hooks to the roof, with the open mouth of the hooks facing toward the center of the roof. Let the hooks dry overnight before attaching the tarp to them.

    • 3

Attach the tarp to the hooks on the roof. Attach the outer two corners of the tarp to the tent poles. Secure each of these ends with one end of guy-rope, then take the poles out until they are taut. You can change the pitch of the awning by adjusting the length of the tent poles.

    • 4

Secure each tent pole by pounding a stake into the ground at the other end of the attached guy-rope, as if you were setting up a tent. The rope at each end should extend out at a diagonal from the corner of the tarp.
