What Do I Use to Fill Holes in a Stone Foundation?

The ground under a building's stone foundation moves due to the soil settling, erosion, tremors you may or may not feel and from heavy trucks and machinery driving by. Over time, movement causes holes and cracks to form in the foundation. These holes and cracks only increase in size if you ignore them. Failure to fill holes in cracks in your stone foundation can lead to animals, insects and the elements entering the structure and causing damage.

Instructions

    • 1

Wipe the area surrounding the hole or crack in your stone foundation with a rag or cloth to remove loose dust and dirt. Removing dust and dirt lets you see any additional holes and cracks.

    • 2

Place one or two pieces of steel wool in the hole to fill the cavity so the ready-mix cement will have something to adhere to. Cracks do not need steel wool filling unless they are large.

    • 3

Mix 1/2 gallon of ready-mix cement and 1/2 gallon of water in a bucket Stir the mixture into a stiff paste using a trowel.

    • 4

Spread the mixture into the hole and any surrounding cracks in the stone foundation. Repeat steps for the next hole or crack you need to fill.
