How to Fix Scuffs on Trex Decking Wood

Because Trex decking contains natural wood products, the color changes with time, similar to all-wood decking. The weathering effect is not a flaw but rather adds to the beauty and patina of Trex decking. If your Trex deck has scuff marks, the scuffs will disappear over time through the natural fading process. If you don't want to wait, however, you can speed up the weathering and help the scuffs disappear.

Things You'll Need

  • Garden hose and water
  • Deck brightener containing oxalic acid or phosphoric acid
  • Protective clothing
  • Garden sprayer

Instructions

    • 1

Hose off your Trex deck frequently with water. According to the Trex company, hosing the deck will speed up the weathering and fading of the scuffs, especially in dry climates.

    • 2

Continue hosing your deck regularly for three months or longer to help the scuffs fade. Since sunlight also helps weather Trex decking, areas in heavy shade take longer to weather. Scuffs may take as long as four months to disappear.

Speed up the disappearance of the scuffs even more by applying a deck brightener made with oxalic acid or phosphoric acid. These products bleach the surface to a lighter color and make scuffs less visible. Since acids are corrosive, wear protective clothing, and wet any nearby plants with a hose. Mix the solution and apply according to product directions. Normally you apply the brightener with a garden sprayer, wait 15 minutes, brush with a deck brush and rinse.
