How to Keep a Storm Door From Slamming in the Wind

When you want to maximize heat and cooling loss from your home, a storm door can enable this energy savings. Because a storm door provides another layer between your home and the outside elements, you may enjoy lower energy costs to heat and cool your home. The storm door needs regular maintenance to keep it functioning properly. Keep a storm door from slamming in the wind or parts of the door may not work properly.

Instructions

Hook the “S” hook on one end of the wind chain through the “S bracket” on the inside top edge of the doorway -- designed for attaching the wind chain.

    • 2

Open the storm door out to a 90-degree angle from the doorway and hold it there momentarily. Determine how long the chain needs to be to allow the door to open no farther than 90 degrees and mark the link that enables this distance.

    • 3

Hook one end of the “S” hook on the other end of the wind chain onto the marked chain link. Hook the other end of the “S” hook through the “S bracket” on the upper edge of the storm door -- designed for attaching the wind chain.

Find the tension-adjustment screw on the inside end of the door closer (located on the inside edge of the storm door). Turn this screw to the right to tighten the tension and make the door close more firmly in the wind. Turn this screw to the left to loosen the tension and make the door close less firmly in the wind.
