How to Replace Bricks on a Front Porch

A brick front porch is subjected to environmental elements and foot traffic. Over time, this can lead the bricks to break, crumble or even fall away. You can replace bricks on a front porch and, with some careful brick shopping, only you will be able to tell where the new bricks are placed. Remember to keep a few extra bricks on hand when you're done with this project. If any other bricks break, you'll be able to replace them immediately.

Instructions

Source out replacement bricks. While you can purchase new bricks at a home and garden store, they may not match your old bricks, especially if they are old. Contact a local brickmaking company or a landscaping company and see if they have historic bricks on hand. Take a small piece of brick with you to match the color as closely as possible.

    • 2

Pry up any broken or cracked bricks. As you are replacing any missing bricks, this is a great time to make a few repairs as well. Use a pry bar to get underneath the bricks and lever them upwards.

    • 3

Prepare the mortar. Mix a small amount of mortar into a plastic bucket. Follow the package instructions for mixing as most brands differ slightly with regard to how the medium is mixed.

    • 4

Mortar around the edges where the new bricks will be placed. Use a trowel and apply a thin coat of mortar in the area where you will be placing the brick. Work one brick at a time because mortar sets quickly.

Replace each brick. Add a thin coat of mortar around the edges of the replacement brick and gently press it into place. Use the edge of your trowel to wipe away any excess mortar. Repeat until all of the bricks have been replaced.
