Troubleshooting a Genie Garage Door Opener Light That Won't Come On

The Genie Company has been around since the early 1920s. Its original mission was to create a broad range of products, including items for the military such as fuse caps. Modern-day Genie limits its manufacturing to remote-controlled garage door opening systems, according to the company website. Many garage door products have an overhead light on the track that pulls the door open. Troubleshooting may determine what is going on when this light fails to work properly.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a stepladder near the light and climb up to access the lens.

    • 2

Slide your fingers around the lens cover until you locate the tabs securing it to the hub. Press the tabs and open the lens.

    • 3

Unscrew the bulb counterclockwise and pull it off away from the socket. Shake the bulb. If you hear a rattling, you need to replace it. Insert a new bulb into the socket and turn clockwise until it stops. Repeat the process if there is more than one bulb.

    • 4

Push up on the lens until the tabs snap into place to close the light. Test the light from the wall console or remote to see if the new bulb works.

    • 5

Wiggle the wires attached to the terminals on the power head to ensure that they are tight, if replacing the bulb does not work. This is the area above the light. Use a screwdriver to tighten any loose connections.

    • 6

Open the breaker box and locate the switch for the garage using the diagram on the inside of the door or labels near the switches. If the switch for the garage is tripped, push it toward the center of the panel and then all the way to the other side. This will turn the breaker back to the "On" position. You can tell a breaker is tripped if it is out of line with the other switches.
