Remove the old vent from the outside of the house by taking out the screws.
Fit the flush bird guard cover over the opening so that the hole in the wall is centered in the vent guard cover. Check that any louvers can open fully and close freely without catching on the wall.
Check that the cover is level, both vertically and horizontally.
Push a pencil through the holes in each corner to mark the position for the screws.
Drill holes at each of the marks; if going into a brick or masonry wall, use a masonry bit, or use a regular bit for siding.
Screw the bird guard cover in place, and test the louvers once more.
Measure the size of the existing vent cover, including how far it extends from the house.
Select a cover that’s larger in all dimensions than your vent cover; measure in the store to be certain.
Fit the cover over the existing vent, checking that the vent is able to open and exhaust the hot air.
Hold in place, using a level to check the guard is level vertically and horizontally.
Mark the screw holes on the wall of the house with a pencil.
Drill holes in the wall for the screws; with a brick or stone wall, use a masonry bit, and use a regular bit for siding.
Hold the bird guard vent cover in place over the vent, and screw in place. Tighten the screws all the way home if you’re putting on a cover where the screen can snap out from the guard, to allow you to clean the vent.
Drive the screws partway home with a cover you can remove for cleaning; the screws should just be tight enough to hold the guard in place, but should still allow you to bend the plastic and squeeze the guard out and back in again after cleaning.
