How to Mount a Vent Cap on Brick

Dryer vent caps mount to the exterior of your home. They protect the dryer vent pipes from rainwater while allowing the dryer to emit air. Mounting a vent cap is a straightforward project that will only take you about one hour. It is possible to replace the vent cap without replacing any of the vent piping. If you are installing a new vent cap onto the side of your brick home, you will need to cut an opening first.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Determine where you want the vent piping to exit the house from the interior wall. Keep in mind the vent pipe should not extend more than 25 feet from the dryer with as few turns as possible. If you do install a 90-degree turn, subtract 5 feet of length. The vent pipe should exit the house no less than 12 inches above ground level. Drill a pilot hole through the center of this location with a 12-inch-long quarter-inch masonry bit and drill.

    • 2

Set a compass to a 4 1/2-inch circle. Trace this circle on the brick exterior wall, using the hole you drilled in Step 1 as the center point.

    • 3

Drill holes through the brick around the circle with the quarter-inch masonry bit. Space the holes about a half inch apart.

    • 4

Place a chisel on the circle on the brick wall. Hit the chisel's handle with a hammer to break the brick along the drilled pilot holes. Move the chisel down about 1 inch and repeat this step. Continue around the circle until all the brick has been chipped away. Once the brick is gone, the house's wood sheathing will be exposed. Attach a 4 1/2-inch hole saw in your drill and drill through the wood sheathing.

    • 5

Insert the vent cap into the hole and press it against the brick. Mark the vent cap's screw holes onto the brick and set the cap aside.

    • 6

Drill pilot holes through the brick using a masonry bit. The masonry bit's diameter depends on the size of wall anchors you will use. Make the pilot hole slightly deeper than the length of your wall anchors.

    • 7

Insert one wall anchor into each hole and tap them flush with a hammer. Line up the vent cap's screw holes with the wall anchors. Drive a supplied screw through each of the vent cap's screw holes and into the wall anchors.
