Removing Black Marks on Aluminum Siding

Recognized for its durability, aluminum siding is a viable exterior cladding option for residential and industrial purposes. Although extremely weather resistant, aluminum siding may acquire black corrosion marks from long-term moisture exposure. Portions of aluminum siding sheltered under roof eves are particularly susceptible to the blistery black marks, since these areas typically receive inadequate sunlight exposure and therefore retain moisture longer than fully exposed portions of the siding. Promptly remove black corrosion marks from aluminum siding to inhibit them from expanding and potentially permanently damaging the siding.

Instructions

    • 1

Wipe the black marks with a dry rag to capture loose grime, which can cause scratches.

    • 2

Rub medium-grade emery cloth lightly over the black corrosion marks using up-and-down motions. Continue rubbing the aluminum siding with the emery cloth until the black marks disappear and bare metal is exposed.

    • 3

Wipe loose sanding residue off the aluminum siding using a tack cloth.

    • 4

Coat the previously marked, now-exposed aluminum with metal primer. Evenly brush or spray the primer onto the aluminum.

    • 5

Let the freshly primed aluminum air-dry overnight.

    • 6

Brush one coat of exterior latex paint evenly over the primed aluminum. Apply a shade of latex paint that matches the existing paint on the surrounding aluminum to camouflage the repair.

    • 7

Let the freshly painted aluminum siding air-dry overnight.
