How to Fix a Door Leak

Exterior doors, when not properly sealed, can begin leaking air and even water when it rains or snows. This can also occur if the door has contracted due to age and exposure to water. Leaking creates a dual problem: First, water leaks can damage your flooring and even the door itself; second, air leaks can make your home's heating and cooling processes inefficient, costing you more money. You can repair door leaks, air or water, using the same technique.

Locate the leak. Shut the door and stand behind it. This works best when the wind is blowing in the direction of the door or it is raining. Observe the locations of the leak. For air leaks, hold your hand over the edges of the door to see where the air is coming in.

Install threshold weatherstripping. This will go underneath the door and help prevent water from coming in. It is sold in varying sizes. Find one sized to the correct width of the door; you can always cut the length to the size needed with a utility knife. Follow the manufacturer's instructions and screw the weatherstripping over the threshold. Open and close the door to make sure it will not catch. If it does, flatten it out by tightening the screws in a clockwise direction. Kneel on top of the threshold to help flatten it out while you work.

Install edge weatherstripping. Purchase self-adhesive foam strips. Open the door. Start at the top of the hinge side of the door and affix the foam. Press it down firmly. Continue until the entire edge of the door has been covered. Open and close the door to make sure the foam will not catch. This foam can also be placed on the latch side of the door as well, but instead of putting it on the door, stick the foam onto the door frame and leave a spot open for the latch mechanism.

Install top weatherstripping. The same foam can also be used to help seal off the top of the door. Follow the same procedure as before.
