How to Replace a Slant Sill Torque Operator

You will commonly find slant sill torque operators on windows attached to mobile homes, modular homes and motor homes. The operator is essentially a worm gear. When you turn the crank handle the worm gear inside the operator turns a gear inside the window casing. This in turn, forces the window to slant outward away from the wall. When the worm gear inside the operator fails to work, you must replace it with a new one.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull the crank handle off the splined shaft protruding from the side of the slant sill torque operator. In some cases, you will locate a setscrew that secures the crank handle to the shaft. This setscrew requires a small flat-head screwdriver or small Allen wrench for removal.

    • 2

Remove the screws that secure the slant sill operator to the windowsill using a screwdriver. Often, you will have three screws, but in some cases, you will have either two or four screws depending on the overall design of the operator.

    • 3

Pull the operator straight sway from the wall. The hub pulls out of the window casing.

    • 4

Place the new operator into the hole in the window casing. The hub on the operator has two notches built into it. Line the notches up with the notches inside the hole on the window casing and then line up the screw holes.

    • 5

Secure the operator to the window casing with the original screws or with the new screws supplied with the replacement operator.

    • 6

Slide the crank handle back onto the splined shaft. If necessary, secure the crank to the shaft with the setscrew.
