What Do You Use to Seal Balcony Tile?

Tile brings an elegant look to any balcony. Although it's easy to maintain, balcony tile can become worn over time from extreme heat and cold. Sealing balcony tile is similar to sealing indoor tile, but it requires additional preparation. Balcony tile can be sealed every few years to protect the stone and grout.
  1. Sealer

    • Tile and grout sealer is available at most home improvement stores. The same sealer is used for indoor and outdoor tiles. When you are choosing a tile sealer, select the type that is best suited for the tile’s type of stone. Some tile sealers, referred to as impregnators, penetrate tile surfaces for additional protection.

    Preparation

    • The balcony tiles require cleaning before sealing. Sweep the balcony with a broom to remove debris. Fill a mop bucket with hot water. Use a deck brush and hot water to clean the tile and remove dirt. Mop the area with clean hot water and a string mop. Allow the tile to dry.

    Sealing

    • After the balcony tiles are clean and dry, put on rubber gloves. Gather the tile sealer and paintbrush and take it onto the balcony. Pour sealer into a paint pan. Saturate the paintbrush with the sealer. Starting in one section farthest away from the balcony’s entrance, brush the sealer onto a section of the tiled area until the tile is covered with sealer. Continue applying sealer in small sections, starting from the balcony’s farthest point and moving back to the balcony entrance.

    Drying

    • Allow the sealer to dry for the recommended time by the sealer’s manufacturer. Sealer dries in approximately three hours on indoor tile, depending on the humidity. Outdoor tile dries more quickly. Because the tile on the balcony is outdoors, apply another coat of sealer after the first coat dries to ensure protection from weather. For best results, seal balcony tile at the time of day when the sun’s warmth comes onto the balcony.
