How to Put in Window Well Drains

A window well is the open area in the ground around a basement window. It is important to properly drain this area because if there isn't a properly designed, functioning drainage system, water can enter the basement through the window. When installing a window well drain, connecting it to the footer drain around the foundation of the house can help carry water away from the window well.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the dirt inside the window well until you reach the footer drain.

    • 2

Cut through the drain tile with a hacksaw so you can fit a tee between the cut sections of pipe. The drain tile is the pipe inside the footer drain that carries water away from the foundation. A tee is a piece of pipe shaped like the letter "T" that allows three pipes to be connected.

    • 3

Apply PVC cement to the inner edges of the two holes of the tee that will be connected to the drain tile.

    • 4

Attach the tee to the drain tile with the tee pointing up.

    • 5

Attach a riser pipe to the tee.

    • 6

Wrap landscaping fabric around the tee to cover all three joints between the tee, drain tile and riser pipe.

    • 7

Fill the hole with 3/4-inch gravel.

    • 8

Cut off the excess length of riser pipe and attach the drain to the end of the pipe.
