How to Seal Between the Roof & Siding

All homes have a joint that needs proper sealing where the roof and siding connect. This helps keep rain and other moisture out and provides insulation so warm air doesn't leak in the winter. You can easily seal this joint with the proper caulk, which will expand as it cures, creating a tight-fitting seal. Exterior grade caulk works as a sealant so the barrier will protect the home from any moisture it is exposed to.

Instructions

    • 1

Brush any dirt or residue out of the joint using a stiff-bristle brush.

    • 2

Open a tube of exterior-grade caulk using a sharp knife or scissors. Insert a nail into the head of the caulk to release the sealant. Use a caulk that is designed for the materials you are joining, such as vinyl siding and wood.

    • 3

Insert the tube into a caulking gun and insert the nozzle into the back of the joint. Depress the plunger and line the crack with a continuous bead of caulk.

    • 4

Wet a rag and wipe it over the caulk so it is flush to the wall and looks smooth.
