How to Install a Metal Drip Edge Around a Round Window

Normally, the lower edge of your window should extend approximately 3/4-inch beyond the fascia board to funnel water runoff from rain into the gutters. If the edge of your window doesn’t extend that far, then you need to consider installing a sheet metal drip edge. If you do not install the drip edge, you could face problems, such as a rotted window or fascia, stained siding or soil erosion around your basement, which could lead to flooding.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the panel of siding directly above the window where you are installing the drip edge. Hook a zip tool into the locking or butt edge of the piece of siding you want to remove. A zip tool is used to "unlock" the siding pieces to allow you to remove them easily.

    • 2

Pull down on the siding once you have the zip tool in place. Move the zip tool along the entire length of the siding strip. This will expose the nailing hem underneath the siding strip.

    • 3

Nail the drip edge in place with a hammer, making sure to center the piece over the window.

    • 4

Cut the flange on the drip edge with tin snips every 3 to 4 inches so that it conforms to the curve of your round window. Cut to the fold of the drip edge, making sure not to cut entirely through it.

    • 5

Cover the nails with roofing tar so they are not exposed to water runoff. Also apply a waterproof sealant around the drip cap where it connects to the house.

    • 6

Replace the piece of siding you removed by snapping it back into place.
