How to Prime a Cellar Door

Your cellar door takes a beating from the elements. Depending on where you live, it may stand up against wind, rain, snow or hail. Over time, this can leave the steel door looking worn down. Fortunately, a simple paint job can brighten up the door. Before doing this, however, you should properly prime the door for paint. Without priming, the paint may not stick to the metal.

Things You'll Need

  • Power washer

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the surface of the door with a power washer. The strength of the washer will remove all particles.

    • 2

Remove any rusted areas by scrubbing with a wire brush.

    • 3

Paint a coat of the oil primer onto the door using a paint brush or paint roller.

    • 4

Allow the coat of primer to dry.

    • 5

Add another coat of primer. After this layer dries, your door is ready for painting.
