Recoloring a Cultured Stone

Refresh the look of your Cultured Stone by recoloring it. Cultured Stone is a trademarked material that is essentially a concrete mixture molded to look like natural stone. Typically it is a solid color to prevent discoloration over time. It's a durable alternative to natural stone, but staining and surface disintegration can occur. If you need to repair your Cultured Stone or want to change its look, recolor the manufactured stone easily with concrete stain.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the Cultured Stone you wish to recolor with the hose if it is an exterior accent. If the Cultured Stone is indoors, place the tarp underneath the area and wipe it with the damp cloth. Allow it to dry.

    • 2

Spray the citrus detergent on the Cultured Stone to remove its seal. One-gallon is enough for about 100-square feet. Apply it liberally. Wait 20 to 40 minutes for the stripper to penetrate the Cultured Stone's seal.

    • 3

Scrub the Cultured Stone with the scrub brush in circular motions to remove its seal. Spray the entire area with the hose to clean off the citrus stripper. If this is an interior job, use the spray bottle.

    • 4

Vacuum the stone with the wet shop vacuum to remove the remaining sealer. Spray water one more time and vacuum the area. Allow it to dry.

    • 5

Mix the concrete stain at your local hardware store's paint department before applying. Dip a 2-inch paintbrush into the concrete stain to recolor areas smaller than 25 feet. Pour the concrete stain into a pump sprayer for larger areas. Then paint or spray in circular motions for an even coat.

    • 6

Repeat the painting or spraying for a second coat. Allow it to activate according to the manufacturer's instructions.

    • 7

Mix 1 tablespoon of baking soda per 1 gallon of water in a bucket as a neutralizing solution. Scrub the entire surface with the mixture. Wash the Cultured Stone with water to rinse off the solution. Allow it to dry.

    • 8

Dip your clean paintbrush into the concrete sealer. Paint the newly recolored Cultured Stone with the sealer. Allow it to dry according to the manufacturer's instructions before applying a second and final coat.
