How to Adjust Accordion Shutters

Accordion shutters are corrugated doors, typically made of steel or aluminum. The shutters slide together and lock horizontally across doors or windows for added security. Accordion shutters are often installed on homes and commercial property in areas prone to hurricanes in late summer through fall. The shutters afford an extra degree of protection for windows and doors. House settling or a severe storm may cause the shutters to stop opening and closing properly. Adjusting an accordion shutter takes only a few minutes using basic tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull out each shutter from the left and right sides of the window, guiding the shutters along the track above and below.

    • 2

Loosen the mounting screws holding the left and right shutters to the window frame, using a screwdriver. Do not remove the screws.

    • 3

Place the locking pin on the bottom of each shutter into its hole on the bottom track. Latch the two shutters together in the middle, using the latch slide.

    • 4

Tighten the mounting screws in the left and right sides of the accordion shutters. This must be done from inside the building with the window open.

    • 5

Open the shutter latch and slide the two halves toward the window frame.

    • 6

Adjust slight dents or bending in the top and bottom tracks, using pliers to straighten the channels. Replace any tracks that have been crushed or badly damaged as a result of storm debris.
