How to Repair Pozzi Window Rot

Pozzi is a brand of window that was later purchased by Jeld-Wen. In some cases, if wood or vinyl windows such as the type Pozzi made are not sealed properly, the wood frame around them will rot. This is a common occurrence and can be fixed in two different ways. If the rot has not extended all the way through the wood, the rotten area can be repaired. If the rot is extensive, the wood will need to be completely replaced.

Instructions

  1. Repairing the Rot

    • 1

Remove the rotten wood with a chisel. Scrape away and tear out all of the rot. Do not leave any rotten material behind or it will create the same problem again.

    • 2

Seal the wood with epoxy wood sealer. Paint or spray the sealer onto the wood. Let it set for 24 hours.

    • 3

Fill the wood with wood filler. Spray the liquid wood filler into the wood to fill in the entire area. Let the first application sit for 24 hours. Inspect the wood. If some empty space still remains, fill in the spot with a second coat of filler. Let this set for 24 hours. You can now hide the patched area with latex paint to match the rest of the area.

    Replacing the Wood

    • 4

Pry out the wood from the window frame with a pry bar. You may also need to use a chisel to scrape away all of the rotten wood.

    • 5

Measure the area with a measuring tape. Write down the figures.

    • 6

Cut a 2-by-4 to fit the area with a circular saw. Keep your fingers away from the blade and keep the blade guide down while you use the saw.

    • 7

Fit the wood into the window frame and nail it into place with a hammer and nails. Wedge the wood as tightly into place as you can. Knock it into the frame with a hammer if necessary. Insert nails through the wood into the rest of the frame.

    • 8

Paint and seal the wood. Paint the wood with an exterior latex paint to match the other wood on the frame. Let this dry for four hours. Apply a coat of wood weatherproofing sealant to the wood.

    • 9

Caulk around the new wood and the rest of the window frame if necessary. To prevent future wood rot, seal off any gaps between the window and the frame with silicone caulk. Load the caulk into a caulk gun. Lay down a bead that is 1/4-inch wide into the open area.
