How to Do Masonry on Stone Houses

Stone houses, while being very durable, can exhibit cracks and even small holes over time. Unlike wood frame houses, these problems cannot be covered over with siding or patched with wood. Masonry work is necessary to fix these cracks. The process is actually quite simple and with pre-made masonry mix, anyone can repair slight cracks or holes. Please note that if the cracks are larger than a foot, more than 3 inches deep, or horizontal, you should call in a foundation specialist for the repairs.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any debris in the crack or hole with the end of a chisel. Scrape out all of the dirt or any remaining pieces of stone in the crack -- these will inhibit the bond with the new masonry. Use your fingers to clean out the rest of the space if necessary.

    • 2

Mix the masonry mix in a clean bucket. Most masonry mixes just require water. Read the package directions and follow them precisely.

    • 3

Scrape the masonry mix into the hole or crack with the end of the trowel. The crack or hole needs to be filled in before it can be sealed over properly. Fit as much mix into the area as you can.

    • 4

Smooth over the surface with more masonry mix. Load up the trowel and scrape on the mix over the surface. Smooth out any rough edges with the flat of the trowel. Let it cure for at least 24 hours before finishing the patch with primer and paint if necessary.
