How to Repair Crumbling Vertical Concrete

Concrete foundations and retaining walls are subject to moisture, pressure and shifting of the earth. Even though this is a very durable material, over time, these conditions can lead to cracking. Exterior damage can also create large cracks and depressions in the surface of the concrete. As long as the crack does not extend too deeply through the concrete, the section can be repaired simply and without the help of a professional.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the surface and inside of the crack or hole with a chisel. Scrape out any dirt or crumbled concrete. Smooth out the surface with your hand if necessary.

    • 2

Prepare the masonry mix. While you can use mortar, masonry mix is premade with limestone, quick-setting concrete and mortar and is much easier to work with. Follow the package directions and mix the mortar mix with water in a clean bucket.

    • 3

Fill in the crack with the edge of the trowel. Load up a small amount of masonry mix on the trowel. Fill in the crack or hole. If necessary, put on gloves and push the mix farther into the crack with your fingers. Do not let masonry mix get on your bare skin.

Skim coat the surface with masonry mix. Load up the masonry mix on the flat of the trowel. Hold it at a 45-degree angle. Smooth the masonry mix over the surface of the crack. Use the edge of the trowel to scrape off any excess. Let this set fully, according to package directions, before priming and painting.
