How to Remove a Gutter Attached to a Pergola

Rain gutters guide rainwater away from your home’s foundation and are especially useful if your home sits on a flat piece of land with no slope away from the house. A pergola is a patio cover made of wood that typically holds climbing plants. If your home’s rain gutters are old and need repairs, you can remove and replace them with new rain gutters. However, if the pergola boards are attached directly to the rain gutters, you’ll need to remove them first.

Instructions

Set up a stepladder under the area where the pergola is attached to the rain gutter and climb up with your tools. In most cases the pergola is actually attached to the inside of the rain gutter against the house and not the outside of the rain gutter.

Use the claw end of a hammer to remove all of the nails that hold the rain gutter to the fascia board on your home. Clip any metal wires that hold pieces of the rain gutter to your home with wire cutters.

    • 3

Locate the brackets that hold the pergola boards to the rain gutter. Loosen the screws or nuts that hold the boards in place, one at a time. After one board is loose, pull the rain gutter down and away from your roof. Screw the pergola back into the house with the screwdriver or wrench to hold the board in place. Repeat this process for all the pergola boards.
