How to Fix Binding Doorbells

One household glitch that refuses to go unnoticed is a binding doorbell. A binding doorbell continues to sound off after its button switch has been released. If the condition were to go on without being corrected, the doorbell unit may become damaged or the bell system transformer could overheat and fail. You can take immediate action to silence a stuck doorbell and fix the problem with basic home repair skills.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the main electrical panel in the home and switch off the breaker for the doorbell circuit.

    • 2

Remove the screws that hold the doorbell switch to the outside wall, using the appropriate screwdriver. With the switch removed, the terminals in the back of the switch will be exposed.

    • 3

Test the two switch wires using a voltage tester. No indicated voltage on the tester verifies that the power is off and it is safe to continue.

    • 4

Loosen the two terminal screws by turning each one counterclockwise with a screwdriver.

    • 5

Remove the wires from the switch.

    • 6

Connect the wires to the terminals of a new doorbell switch. Tighten the terminal screws clockwise.

    • 7

Install the new switch onto the outer wall. Tighten the mounting screws with a screwdriver.

    • 8

Restore power to the doorbell and test.
