How to Repair Vinyl Corner Board

When the vinyl siding was installed onto your home, the installers covered the edges of the siding along the corners of with a single vertical angled siding piece known as a corner board. The corner boards are just as strong and sturdy as the rest of the vinyl siding on your home, and as such can last for decades. As with the rest of your siding, though, mishaps can cause damage to the board, sometimes leaving the board broken in place. All that you need is a matching piece of corner board and a few tools to replace the damaged area and restore the corner board to full function.

Instructions

    • 1

Place chalk marks across the piece of corner board 2 inches above and below the damaged section.

    • 2

Measure the distance between the chalk lines with a tape measure and note the measurement.

    • 3

Cut the damaged piece of corner board with tin snips at both chalked locations. Remove the nails from the nailing flanges along the edges of the corner board holding it onto the wall, using the claw end of a claw hammer.

    • 4

Mark two lines onto the center of a piece of replacement corner board, using the measured damage area to space the markings. Cut the marked section off the full piece with the tin snips, and then cut the nailing flanges off the sides of the piece with a utility knife.

    • 5

Sand the rear of the corner board with medium-grit sandpaper to create a slight textured surface for glue adherence. Wipe the surface clear of residue with a piece of cloth.

    • 6

Place painter’s tape onto the old corner board still attached to the corner of the house, along the upper edge of the bottom piece, to protect it from dripping glue.

    • 7

Brush a layer of construction adhesive onto the rear of the replacement corner board piece and onto the damaged corner of the wall. Wait for the wet look to disappear from the adhesive. The adhesive will still feel sticky to the touch.

    • 8

Press the corner board onto the corner of the house where you removed the damaged board. Tape it securely to the wall using painter’s tape running across the board about every 4 inches down its length. Allow the adhesive to dry overnight and then remove the tape from the board surface.

Seal the seams between the new section and the old with a bead of silicone caulk. Smooth the caulk along the seam with a wet fingertip.
