How to Replace the Eyebrow Over a Window on a Hip & Mansard Roof

Eyebrow windows first made their appearance on the thatched roofs of medieval huts. Today the curved lines of eyebrow windows, also known as eyebrow dormers, rise from the roofs of modern homes of many styles, including the hip and mansard roof-style home. An eyebrow in a home with a hip and mansard roof is placed in the mansard, steeply-pitched, part of the roof. The steep pitch of the mansard roof allows installation of a shallow eyebrow window only. Replacing the eyebrow over the window is a matter of replacing the curved roof rising out of the mansard roof.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the old roofing material covering the eyebrow rafters. Use appropriate carpentry tools for removing shingles, tiles, tin or other material.

    • 2

Inspect for structural soundness of the eyebrow roof. Look for broken, weak or otherwise deteriorated rafters.

    • 3

Repair the roof, if possible, and install new covering. However, if the eyebrow roofing structure is badly damaged, it must be replaced.

    • 4

Measure the old or damaged rafters and the header. Remove the damaged materials in preparation for building a new eyebrow roof.

    • 5

Sandwich four layers of plywood using wood glue between layers to construct a new header. Screw the layers together for extra strength, using a drill with a screwdriver bit. Nail the new header into place using 16d nails.

    • 6

Cut new rafters from 2 by 4 lumber. Use the measurements taken from the old rafters. Butt the rafters against the new header and toenail in using 16d nails, or install according to the design of the old rafters, if different.

    • 7

Bend one layer of 3/8-inch plywood over the dormer to form a sheath. Tack in place with just enough 12d nails to hold it. Add another layer of 3/8-inch plywood for extra strength. Nail the two layers of plywood sheathing to the rafters. Use 12d nails every 6 inches the length of each rafter.

    • 8

Install shingles, tiles, tin or other roof covering as desired. Follow manufacturer's instructions.
