How to Stain Purity Thatched Shingles

Weatherside Purity Thatched Shingle siding is installed in place of asbestos siding. The shingles' uneven bottom edge creates a thatched appearance. These shingles come pre-primed, which makes a gel stain suitable for finishing these shingles. Unlike paint, stain won't chip or peel. Stain must be applied liberally with a paintbrush or cloth and, after a few minutes, the excess stain is wiped away. A clear exterior polyurethane must be applied to make the stained shingles weatherproof.

Instructions

    • 1

Don a face mask and protective eyewear.

    • 2

Connect your power washer to a garden hose and turn on the water supply.

    • 3

Turn on the power washer and immediately depress the trigger at the base of the nozzle to begin power washing the shingle siding. Start at the top and work your way down to the foundation. Allow the siding to dry before attempting to stain the shingles.

    • 4

Open the stain can with a flat-head screwdriver. Place the screwdriver head between the lid and the edge of the can and press down on the screwdriver handle to pry the lid off.

    • 5

Remove your protective eyewear, but keep your face mask on to avoid inhaling the fumes from the stain and polyurethane.

    • 6

Apply the gel stain to the shingles with a large paintbrush. Paint from top to bottom, working in the direction of the grain. Work in small sections. The stain must remain on the shingles for three minutes before it's wiped off.

    • 7

Wipe off the excess stain after three minutes. Use a lint-free rag to wipe the shingles in the direction of the grain. Allow to dry.

    • 8

Paint two coats of clear exterior polyurethane over the freshly stained siding shingles. Paint in the direction of the grain, from top to bottom. Coat the bottom edges of the shingles, too. Allow the first coat to dry completely before applying a new coat. Consult the product directions for information on the recommended drying time.
