Steel Storage Cabinets Vs. Aluminum

If you are looking for a storage solution, the two main types of cabinets are metal and wood. Metal cabinets made of steel or aluminum have a few benefits over wood, particularly when it comes to security and life span. You should consider the differences between steel and aluminum cabinets before you make purchase a metal cabinet.
  1. Overall Cost

    • Steel is a much more expensive metal than aluminum, and it's harder to manufacture; as such, cabinets made of steel will cost much more than those made of aluminum. The cost of steel, however, is offset by its durability; over the long term, it can prove a better investment. The amount of cabinetry needed and the expected use of the cabinet will factor into this decision. If you are on a tight budget and need several cabinets, aluminum may be the best option.

    Installation

    • Steel is a very heavy material and this makes it more difficult and costly to install and to transport. Aluminum is a very light material and will be easier to move to your location and install. If you have friends that can help you, installing a steel cabinet will be much easier. If you are the only person installing the cabinet, aluminum will be easier to work with.

    Life Expectancy

    • Both types of cabinets can have problems with moisture and have potential to rust. Steel, if properly treated, will last for decades. Aluminum has a slightly shorter life span. Both types of cabinets should be painted with rust-resistant paint to protect the finish and lengthen the life of the cabinets. They should be placed away from water and inspected frequently for signs of rust and wear.

    Proper Care

    • Any time rust is spotted on an aluminum or steel cabinet, it should be sanded down with steel wool and treated with paint. If left alone, the rust will spread over time, weakening the structure of the cabinet. Aluminum is more affected by rust since it is a thinner metal and the rust can easily rot away entire sections of the cabinet if it is not treated. Both types of cabinets should be cleaned regularly with a household cleaner to keep dirt from building up.
