How to Remove a Bent Aluminum Awning

Aluminum awnings are widely used in domestic applications. Aluminum is favored as an awning material for its resistance to rust, long lifespan and light weight. Aluminum awnings can be painted to match any decor and are less expensive than many cloth alternatives. When an aluminum awning becomes bent, there is little that can be done outside of removal and replacement. Aluminum awnings generally are held to the exterior wall by a series of mounting screws, which are then sealed over with caulk.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the mounting screws at the bottom edge of the side wings of your aluminum awning. If your awning does not have side wings, it may have support bars or rods which also anchor it to the wall at each side beneath the main awning overhang. Use your screwdriver to loosen and remove the anchor screws that hold the side anchors to the wall. Have a helper or two support the awning as you remove these anchor screws so it does not come crashing down, ripping the remaining anchors out of the wall on its way.

    • 2

Position a ladder so that you can easily reach the top edge of the awning where it meets the exterior wall. Use your razor knife and flathead screwdriver to scrape off the caulking that seals the seam between the awning and the wall and conceals the anchor screws beneath.

Locate the anchor screws along the top edge of the awning, and use your screwdriver to loosen and remove them. Be prepared for the awning to release its weight as you remove the screws.
