How to Fix Broken Vinyl Siding On an Outside Corner

Vinyl siding is a durable, low-maintenance option to cover the exterior walls of both residential and commercial buildings. While vinyl withstands minor bumps, it cracks and breaks if hit with a strong force. If the break occurs at one of the corners, the repair requires cutting out the damaged area and replacing it with a patch. The repair is mainly for aesthetic purposes, since the corner section is simply trim that disguises the ends of the actual siding planks.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape measure
  • Replacement vinyl corner bead
  • Pencil
  • Tin snips
  • Utility knife
  • Fine-grit sandpaper
  • Tack cloth

Instructions

    • 1

Brush the damaged corner of the siding, using your fingers to remove any remaining loose vinyl from the corner bead. Don’t try to break any material off unless it hangs outside the break, which will interfere with the patch.

    • 2

Position a tape measure along the corner and determine the length of the break. Add 4 inches to the total to determine how long to cut the patch.

    • 3

Locate or purchase a vinyl corner bead strip in the same color as the siding on the home. Lay the strip flat and measure from one end with the tape measure until you reach the predetermined patch length. Mark the location with a pencil.

    • 4

Cut along the pencil line using tin snips to trim the corner bead patch down to size.

    • 5

Lay the patch on a work surface and cut along the left and right sides to remove the small flaps that typically hold it in place via nails. You can cut these flaps off easily with a utility knife.

    • 6

Turn the patch face-down and sand all interior surfaces using a fine-grit sandpaper, just to roughen them up slightly. Sand the entire corner of the home in the same manner, from the location of the break and 2 inches above and below it.

    • 7

Wipe the replacement patch and the side of the home with a tack cloth to remove the sanding dust.

    • 8

Apply a 1/8-inch layer of polyurethane construction adhesive to the entire back of the patch. Press it into place on the corner of the home, centering it over the broken area.

    • 9

Apply strips of painter’s tape over the patch to hold it to the siding until the adhesive dries. Wait 24 hours and then remove the tape from the home.
