How to Install a Manual Pushbutton for a Garage Door

Automatic garage door openers are one of the most practical devices for the home garage. A remote control keypad operated from your car activates the mechanism that raises the door as you arrive and closes it when you leave. A manually operated pushbutton switch at the service door can be installed so the door opens when you're not in your car. The optional switch hardware is included with the door opener and requires only a few tools and basic wiring skills to install.

Instructions

    • 1

Switch off the power to the garage door opener at the main circuit breaker box.

    • 2

Put a stepladder under the head of the garage door opener, which contains the motor and drive assembly.

    • 3

Remove the head screws along the lower edges of the cover, turning counterclockwise with the appropriate screwdriver.

    • 4

Locate the two switch terminals at the rear of the head. The terminals are marked No. 1 and 2.

    • 5

Test the terminals with a voltage tester to ensure the power is off. Place one probe of the tester on terminal 1 and the other on terminal 2. No reading on the tester verifies the power is off and it's safe to proceed.

    • 6

Strip 1/2 inch of insulation off the white and striped switch wires, using wire strippers.

    • 7

Connect the striped wire to the B terminal on the opener head and the white wire to W. Tighten the terminal screws clockwise with a screwdriver.

    • 8

Route the wires along the side of the head and replace the head cover. Tighten the head screws.

    • 9

Attach the wire to the framework of the garage with wire staples. Lightly tap the staples into the frame with the hammer. Don't crush the wire with the staple.

    • 10

Mount the base of the switch near the service door and tighten the base screws.

    • 11

Cut the switch wires to sufficient length to reach the switch base, using wire cutters. Strip 1/2 inch of insulation off each end.

    • 12

Connect the striped wire to the B terminal of the switch base and the white wire to the W terminal. Tighten the terminal screws with a screwdriver.

    • 13

Mount the pushbutton wall switch at the chosen location. Tighten the mounting screws clockwise with the screwdriver.

    • 14

Restore power to the garage door opener.
