How to Fix Ice Buildup Damage Against Vinyl Siding Where It Meets the Roof

Harsh winter conditions can cause roofing and vinyl siding damage when ice builds up in the crevices and separations between materials. This action can cause moisture intrusion in the underlying materials when temperatures warm and the ice gradually melts. Periodically inspect the home envelope structure, especially where vinyl siding joins the roof and other areas at the roof line where materials meet. Additional measures to insulation attic areas will help prevent the formation of ice dams and resulting roof and siding damage.

Things You'll Need

  • Snow rake
  • Ladder
  • Hose
  • Vycor bitumen sealing material
  • Siding nails, 1-3/4 inch galvanized.
  • Drill and ¼-inch drill bit
  • Aluminum flashing
  • Hammer

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the ice dam on the roof that is causing the separation between the vinyl siding and the roof edge.

    • 2

Remove the snow from the roof with the snow rake from the ground or by standing on the lower rungs of the ladder.

    • 3

Apply water from a hose to the built-up ice to melt a channel to allow any additional melted snow to fall from the roof, if necessary.

    • 4

Locate the separated area where the siding has separated from the roof line.

    • 5

Remove any remaining ice from the separated vinyl material. Avoid using sharp tools such as chisels, which could damage roofing and siding materials.

    • 6

Attach the Vycor, self-adhesive bitumen material and carefully press into place, making sure it fits under the roof line.

    • 7

Nail the siding back into place below the roof line using 1-3/4 inch galvanized nails.

    • 8

Add additional aluminum flashing at the roof line and nail into place.
