How to Finish an Eave Overhang

Although an eave overhang is typically not visible unless you are standing directly underneath it, this part of your home still needs finishing. Eaves are typically made of wood, and if this wood is not protected from the elements, over time it will rot. Finishing an eave overhang makes the entire exterior paint job look professional and finished. This project takes a few hours to complete, depending on the size of your house.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a ladder directly under the eaves. Use a ladder that is tall enough so you don't have to stretch to reach the eaves.

    • 2

Scrape off any old paint on the eave overhang with a paint scraper. Sand down stubborn flakes of paint with a sanding block. Brush off the dust and any hanging debris.

    • 3

Cut in around the edges of the overhang with a small paintbrush. If you have wood trim inside the overhang, cut around this as well.

    • 4

Paint the overhang with a roller to give an even finish to the eaves. You may need to use a smaller edge roller on the wood trim. Let the paint dry for four hours.

    • 5

Inspect the overhang. If you see spots where the wood is showing through, you will need a second coat of paint. Touch-ups will suffice for small areas.
