How to Restore a Board & Batten Vertical Cedar Sided Home

Restoring board and batten cedar siding on the exterior of your home is not a complicated process if you utilize the right products. Board and batten siding is generally placed on a structure in a vertical fashion. The battens are narrow strips of wood placed over the seams in the boards underneath. This gives the building an old-fashioned appearance that is pleasing to many homeowners. Regular maintenance restores the cedar so it is long-lasting and attractive for many years.

Instructions

  1. Using Paint Stripper

    • 1

Apply a paint stripper to the cedar board and batten with a quality paintbrush. Follow the directions on the container for the best results. The paint stripper removes dirt and debris that builds up over time as well as any oil-based and latex stains on the wood.

    • 2

Rinse the paint stripper well from the structure with a garden hose.

    • 3

Wait for the cedar board and batten to dry thoroughly before applying paint. If you prefer the natural look of uncoated cedar, the restoration is complete after applying and rinsing the paint stripper.

    Painting the Cedar

    • 4

Cover the board and batten siding with a water-repellent wood preservative and a quality paintbrush. Take care to thoroughly cover the seam areas in the batten sections as well as the boards underneath when restoring the cedar. This prevents invasion of moisture and provides an effective surface for the paint

    • 5

Wait at least two sunny days for the preservative to dry completely. This ensures that the cedar is protected adequately.

    • 6

Apply an alkyd oil-based primer to the board and batten siding with a paintbrush. This helps seal the wood and cover the grain.

    • 7

Wait for the primer coat to dry well on the board and batten before continuing.

    • 8

Apply latex exterior paint to the cedar siding with a paintbrush. Cedar is a lightweight wood, thus paint protects it well since it does not swell and shrink as much as heavier-weight woods. It is the most effective way to protect the wood from weather and moisture, according to the Western Cedar Lumbar Association.
