How to Form Walls Down to a Fence

If you have a concrete or stone wall in your backyard and you'd like to turn it into a fence, you can do so with a little patience and a saw made for cutting stone and concrete. Make sure to take the appropriate safety precautions when using a saw — especially when cutting structures that may have flying, sharp debris that can hurt you.

Things You'll Need

  • Chalk line
  • Yardstick
  • Respirator
  • Goggles
  • Face mask
  • Sturdy work gloves
  • Saw made for cutting stone or concrete

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the amount you'd like to take away from the wall with a yardstick. For example, measure 5 inches from the top of the wall down.

    • 2

Pull out a chalk line string with the help of a friend and stretch it across the length of the wall at the 5-inch mark. Pull back the line and snap it. A chalk line will appear across the wall. Go around to the other side of the wall and repeat the procedure so another chalk line appears on the wall. You'll be cutting both sides of the wall, so you need a chalk line on both sides.

Put on your protective gear, including goggles, work gloves, a face mask and a respirator.

Turn on the saw while it's on the ground. You'll need to pull the chain back several times, much like you'd start a lawn mower. Pick up the saw by the handle. Gently place the saw into the edge of the wall by angling the blade in a horizontal direction. Cut across the chalk line by pressing the saw into the wall. The blade will move deeper into the wall. Cut a few inches deep, then go around to the other side of the wall. Work in the same direction so you cut completely through the wall. If the wall is long, then you may want to break up the cutting so you can remove the concrete more easily. To do this, cut horizontally for about 10 inches. Then make a vertical cut that meets the horizontal cut. You'll have a concrete block that you can knock off the wall with a sledgehammer and further cut into smaller pieces on the ground. Repeat this technique all the way down the length of the wall until you have a fence instead of a wall.
