How to Seal Exterior Cinder Block Fences

Sealing exterior cinder block fences will help prolong the life of the structure. If the fence is not sealed properly, moisture can seep in and cause severe structural damage to the fence, which will lead to an expensive and time-consuming repair. Fortunately, sealing cinder block is a relatively cheap and easy process that requires only a few products you can purchase at home improvement stores. For best results, follow the specific instructions and warnings located on the back of the sealer.

Instructions

    • 1

Cover holes and cracks on the cinder block wall with cinder block epoxy. Use a trowel to smooth the epoxy. Allow the epoxy to cure for the time recommended by the manufacturer, which could be from a few hours to several weeks.

    • 2

Clean moss, mildew, mold, dirt and white efflorescence off the cinder block fence with neutral cleaner and a brush broom. Scrub the fence gently with the brush broom and rinse with cool water. Let the cinder block fence dry for several hours.

    • 3

Pour masonry sealer in a clean paint tray. Secure a clean paint roller nap to a paint roller.

    • 4

Roll the paint roller nap in the masonry sealer until it is completely covered. Hold the roller above the paint tray for several seconds to let the excess sealer drip off the roller.

    • 5

Start at one end of the exterior cinder block fence, and apply the sealer to the surface with the paint roller. Roll the paint roller in even strokes.

    • 6

Continue applying the sealer to the cinder block fence while working your way toward the opposite end. Continue in this manner until the entire cinder block fence is covered.

    • 7

Let the fence dry for several hours. Add a second coat of masonry sealer to the cinder block fence if needed.
