How to Brace a Metal Stud Wall

Many homebuilders choose to use metal wall studs for a variety of reasons. Metal studs do not burn or succumb to rot as wooden studs do. Metal wall studs are also lightweight, yet strong when assembled. When extra support is needed, a brace can be installed to add strength to the framework using scraps from previously cut studs. You can install a brace at any needed point of a metal stud wall using the proper tools, materials and basic do-it-yourself skills.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length needed for your brace from a metal stud, or scrap, of the same size using a measuring tape.

    • 2

Scribe a line at the required length using a metal scribe.

    • 3

Cut the length at the scribed mark using a hack saw.

    • 4

Install the brace diagonally between the horizontal and vertical sections of the framework. The sides of the brace should overlap the sides of the frame.

    • 5

Drill a 1/4-inch diameter hole through the four sides of the brace and frame using a drill fitted with a 1/4-inch steel drill bit.

    • 6

Insert a 3/16 bolt in each of the four holes from the outside of the brace.

    • 7

Install a lock washer onto each bolt from the inside of the brace followed by a nut. Turn the nuts clockwise by hand until snug.

    • 8

Tighten the nuts using two adjustable wrenches. One wrench holds the head of the bolt as you tighten the nut clockwise.
