How to Replace a Fascia Board Over an Aluminum Porch Awning

Fascia boards, the boards between the edge of the roof and the soffit and gutters, are exposed to the elements and wear over time. Failure to replace a damaged fascia board may lead to roof damage because moisture and even small animals may gain access to the roof. Replacing fascia boards is generally an easy task when open access is allowed. When replacing a fascia board over an aluminum awning, care must be taken not to apply pressure to the awning, which could bend the aluminum.

Instructions

    • 1

Retract the aluminum porch awning using the hand crank or electronic device; this tucks the awning away, allowing open access to the fascia. If you don't have a retractable aluminum porch awning, remove the awning completely before continuing; look for directions in the awning user's guide.

    • 2

Place a ladder or scaffold against the house, ensuring it is stable enough to support your weight as you work.

    • 3

Take off the gutters, soffit and any other pieces that restrict access to the fascia board. These pieces are usually attached with screws, making them easy to remove and replace as needed.

    • 4

Remove the fascia board from the house. Remove the screws, if applicable, or use a pry bar to remove a fascia board that is nailed to the house. Use caution when using a pry bar to ensure you don't damage the room or side of the house.

    • 5

Determine how the old fascia board was joined with the neighboring fascia boards. Check the ends of the connecting fascia boards to see if they have an 45-degree angled cut or straight edges.

    • 6

Measure and cut a new fascia board to fit the open space, using the old fascia board as a template. If the fascia boards feature angled cuts, cut each end with a miter saw, ensuring that the angle of each cut lines up with the angles of the cuts on the neighboring fascia boards.

    • 7

Line up the new board with the neighboring fascia boards and mark the point of entry for the screws or nails that held them together; ensure the mark on the new board lines up perfectly with the existing holes on the neighboring boards. Mark the location of any roof rafters on the new board so you can secure the board in place later.

    • 8

Drill a 1/4-inch pilot hole through the marks on both ends of the new fascia board.

    • 9

Set the new fascia board back in place and secure with a screw through the pilot holes on each end of the board.

    • 10

Drive at least one screw through the fascia board into the roof rafters, using the marks you made as a guide to locate the rafters.

    • 11

Paint the fascia board to match the rest of the fascia boards on the house. If the existing boards are weathered, it may be best to repaint all the fascia boards so the repair is unnoticeable.

    • 12

Reinstall or open the aluminum porch awning.
