How to Replace a Wireless Alarm Door Sensor

Wireless alarm door sensors are one of the most economical and effective ways of protecting your home. A typical wireless system is battery-operated and comprised of two components: a transmitting sensor and a magnet. The sensor usually mounts on the framework of a door while the magnet is mounted in close proximity to the sensor on the door itself. When a sensor has failed, it must be replaced to restore the integrity of your home security system. You can replace the sensor with basic do-it-yourself ability.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the cover from the wireless alarm sensor by pulling it towards you using your hand.

    • 2

Locate the batteries and remove them from their compartment pulling them up and out by hand.

    • 3

Remove the sensor unit from its mounting plate using a utility knife. Slide the blade of the knife between the sensor and plate to sever the adhesive tape which binds the two surfaces together.

    • 4

Remove residual adhesive glue from the mounting plate using a glue remover. Allow the surface to dry as indicated by the product manufacturer.

    • 5

Attach the new wireless alarm sensor to the mounting plate with double-sided tape. Peel the back off from the tape and press the sensor into position ensuring the sensor is correctly aligned with the magnetic contact on the door. Typically, there are red lines on both the contact and the sensor which must be aligned and face each other from a distance of no more than 1/2 inch, or 10mm.
