How to Wire a Bathroom Vent Fan

A bathroom vent fan does more than just remove odors. By removing excess moisture from the bathroom, a properly installed vent fan can prevent mold, mildew and rot. Hot, steamy showers can cause the walls of the bathroom to become damp, inviting fungus growth and causing the wood to rot. A vent fan pulls the humidity out of the bathroom, helping prevent damage that moisture can cause. Once installed, a bathroom vent fan is easy to wire.

Instructions

    • 1

Shut off the breaker powering the vent fan at the main electrical panel.

    • 2

Remove the retaining screws from the wiring box on the fan bracket. Pull the cover off the box and set it aside. Remove the metal knockout from the side of the wiring box with a flat screwdriver.

    • 3

Slide the threaded end of a cable clamp into the knockout hole with the threads extending into the wiring box. Attach the cable clamp to the wiring box by threading the knurled nut that came with the clamp onto the clamp threads until it is secure. Use a wrench to tighten it.

    • 4

Slide the end of the supply wire through the cable clamp, into the wiring box. Tighten the screw on the cable clamp with a Phillips screwdriver. Cut the wire so three inches of wire extends out of the box. Strip the outer jacket off the wire inside the wiring box.

    • 5

Bare the ends of the conductors by removing 1/2 inch of insulation with the wire strippers.

    • 6

Slide the end of the black conductor into the terminal marked "L" and tighten the terminal screw with a flat screwdriver. Insert the white conductor into the terminal marked "N" and tighten the terminal screw. Slide the bare copper wire into the terminal marked "Ground" and tighten the screw.

Place the cover on the wiring box, insert the retaining screws and tighten them securely. Finish installing the vent fan according to the manufacturer's instructions. Turn the supply breaker on.
