How to Install a Double Pole Thermostat

The baseboard heaters in your home typically use 240 volts to provide heat. Two 120-volt wires that connect to the heater through a thermostat provide this voltage. A double-pole thermostat controls both wires connected to the heater. When the thermostat is off, no voltage reaches the heater. Installing a double-pole thermostat requires basic wiring and electrical abilities.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a mounting location for the thermostat. Read and follow the thermostat manufacturer's recommendations when selecting a location.

    • 2

Place the template that comes with the gang box against the wall in the chosen location. Mark the outline of the template with a pencil. Cut along the marked lines with a drywall saw. Push the gang box into the hole and tighten the mounting screws with a Phillips screwdriver.

    • 3

Run a length of two-conductor wire from the gang box to the location of the heater. Run a length of two-conductor wire from the gang box to the location of the breaker panel. Cut the wires, leaving 3 inches of wire extending from the front of the gang box. Remove the outer jacket from the wires inside the gang box.

    • 4

Strip half an inch of insulation off the ends of the conductors in the gang box. Connect the black conductor from the breaker panel to the black conductor marked "Line" on the thermostat. Insert the bare ends of both conductors into a wire nut and turn the nut clockwise until it's tight. Connect the white conductor from the breaker panel to the red conductor marked "Line" with a wire nut.

    • 5

Connect the black conductor going to the heater to the black conductor marked "Load" on the thermostat. Connect the white conductor going to the heater to the white conductor marked "Load" on the thermostat. Twist the bare copper wires together and connect them with a wire nut.

    • 6

Push the wires into the box. Seat the thermostat base onto the front of the gang box. Insert the included retaining screws and tighten them securely. Snap the thermostat cover onto the base.

    • 7

Connect the wires to an appropriately sized breaker according to the breaker panel manufacturer's instructions. Connect the wires to the heater according to the heater manufacturer's instructions.
