How to Install a Second Fixture to an End of the Run Switch

A typical electrical circuit can handle the addition of another light wired in parallel. Contact your local building authority to determine the number of devices allowed on a single circuit before beginning. Wiring the addition fixture to the switch is simple if you understand how electricity is delivered. The black wire provides the power from the distribution panel. The white wire provides the path back to the source, and the green wire acts as the safety system.

Things You'll Need

  • Non-contact voltage detector
  • Wire cutters
  • Wire strippers
  • 14/2 gauge wire with ground
  • Twist-on wire connectors
  • Pliers

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the power at the home's distribution panel for the circuit you're working on. Double-check that the power is off by touching a non-contact voltage detector to the wire's insulation. Also check that no other lights on that circuit have power.

    • 2

Remove the screw that secures the faceplate on the switch and set the faceplate aside. Remove the two screws that secure the switch to the electrical box.

    • 3

Strip 3/8 inches of insulation off the 14/2 gauge wire with wire strippers. Pull the switch from the electrical box with your hand.

    • 4

Untwist the two white wires in the switch electrical box and re-twist them together, including the white wire from the 14/2 gauge wire, with pliers. Install a twist-on wire connector on top.

    • 5

Cut the top right black wire on the switch about six inches from the switch. Strip 3/8 inches of insulation from both ends. Twist these two black wires with the black wire from the 14/2 gauge wire and install a twist-on wire connector on top.

    • 6

Loosen the grounding screw in the back of the switch's electrical box and wrap the green wire from the 14/2 gauge wire around it. Tighten the screw back down.

    • 7

Run the 14/2 gauge wire to the fixture and cut to length. Strip 3/8 inches of insulation from the end of the wires.

    • 8

Twist together the black wire from the 14/2 gauge wire with the fixture's black wire and install a twist-on wire connector on top.

    • 9

Twist together the white wire from the 14/2 gauge wire with the fixture's white wire and install a twist-on wire connector on top.

    • 10

Loosen the grounding screw in the back of the fixture's electrical box. Wrap the green wire around this screw and tighten it down.

    • 11

Install the switch back into its electrical box, reversing the process used to remove it. Push the fixture's wires into the electrical box and secure the fixture to the box with the two screws provided.
