How to Fix a Loose Connection on a Main Breaker

A building's main breaker is the switch that controls the power supply for the whole house. In an emergency situation you can disconnect the electricity by opening this switch. Because the whole building's electricity travels through this device, it is designed to carry significant electrical loads. If a connection becomes loose it can cause an electrical short or even a fire. Correcting any problems with this deice quickly after discovering them is important for the safety of the building's occupants.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact your local electrical provider and arrange a day for them to turn off the building's power at the street.

    • 2

Confirm the power is off by checking whether or not any device in the home has power. Double check that there is no electricity by touching a non-contact electrical detector to the supply wire's insulation.

    • 3

Remove the screws that secure the cover on the main breaker. Remove the cover and set aside.

    • 4

Inspect the loose connection for signs of melting wires or a burnt terminal. If either of these conditions exist, you need to replace the entire main breaker.

    • 5

Tighten the connection on the main breaker by turning the terminal screw clockwise. Reinstall the panel cover by reversing the process used to remove it.
